The novel begins at the end of World War II and ends at sunrise.

Book II (Dawn) tells the story of the doctor Jack, who loses his father Mr Albert Winston because of cancer and then finds the same disease in the body of his lover. His tragedy made him join one of the radical organizations that he called a social cancer, but his joining was to save his lover Janet.
