A level 1 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Written for Learners of English by Rachel Bladon.
What is Japan? It is everything new and modern: the Tokyo Sky Tree, 634 metres high; amazing cameras and phones; karaoke and manga; trains going past at 300 kilometres an hour. And it is everything ancient too: beautiful palaces; high mountains and hot springs; cherry blossom in the spring; quiet gardens with water and trees. Here the past meets the future all the time. From sumo wrestlers to robots, Japan has something amazing for everybody.
Hm-m… I should have noticed the words «Level 1». Never mind, I was very pleased to learn from this school textbook called Japan that this country is not a fabulous one any more, yet it is odd enough to be a theme for a primary school composition which, in fact is the level of this magnificicen research – of the land where the jambories… sorry, the geishas live, that their lifeis rice and their speech is fish and chips and their capitals much like a multicoloured heave… Fancied in true amusement of a little child, the book is mostly a fairy tale for small Britons than a serious educative resource. Still, the book is easy reading, so lets take it easy.
